Breaking Free From Work

By Keith Reinber

I have been working really hard for many years and have barely seen my kids grow up. I am a lawyer, trying to build my name and reputation. I would spend 20 hours of my day in the office trying to play out how I would handle the trial. I would literally spend more time in my office than in my own home. I have an understanding wife, but she also has her limits.

This time I knew I had to make up for lost time. I have a 12 year old son, Jimmy and a 10 year old daughter, Ella. When they had their first school play, I was not able to watch, during their family day activities, I was not there to participate, when they ran out of their rooms because they were scared of the lightning, I was not there to comfort them.

I am already a junior partner and it will take another 5-10 years before I become a senior partner in our firm. I was not yet entitled to a vacation. Yet, I must also spend time with my kids. There are just some things I have to risk losing to be able to get something, the love and attention of my wife and kids.

This weekend, and another week after that, I will take my kids out to a vacation they will never forget. I will take them sailing over the weekend. We will have fun activities like fishing and swimming. For the next two weeks, I can caress my wife and kiss my children without having to worry about my schedule.

When I told my family about it they were ecstatic. Together, they hugged and kissed me like there was no tomorrow. The next day, we bought a sailing bag and other sailing gear. A sailing bag is supposed to be big enough to carry the things we would need for the trip.

The day after that, my family and I went to the docks to board the yacht I had rented for the trip. When we were all onboard, I signaled for the captain to sail out to sea. My first sailing expedition with my wife and kids was fun and memorable. I am a lawyer and should have a way with words, buy this time I have no words to describe the feeling of warmth and joy. I hope this would not be the last time I can spend time with my family.
